 Same Sex Marriage in Baja?
Same Sex Marriage in Could See Debate In Baja LegislatureTijuana, BCN - Mexican legislative representative from Baja California suggests a debate on the subject of same-sex marriage in Baja is appropriate, saying a law "that ensures coexistence between people of both sexes" would be a good idea.
It would require a "considerable percentage" of Baja Californians to propose a law of coexistence in the state legislature, but if that happened, he saw it as a possibility.
Leading GLBT Baja California figure, Lorenzo Herrera Maria estimated that about 10,000 homosexuals lived in the state.
The conversation was brought about by recent actions in Mexico City and other cities and states to legalize same sex marriage.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Steering Committee Municipal National Action Party, (PAN) Rodrigo Robledo Silva, spoke against the passage of legislation in these terms.
Passing a law of this type (coexistence between people of the same gender) would legislate against the rules of nature, Robledo Silva stressed.

Re: Same Sex Marriage in Baja?
I strongly suspect that Lorenzo's estimate of 10,000 GLBT in Baja California is underestimated. He is very active in Tijuana, and his numbers are probably based largely on Tijuana.
Two things:
I think that in cities such as Mexicali and Ensenada, where numerous college and university campus' abound, those cities could easily match the out gay population in Tijuana.
Secondly, the retired foreign resident GLBT in Baja is not insignificant, but totally unmeasured.
And, if we actually include the entire GLBT communities... meaning actually being able to identify the bisexual segment, 10,000 certainly has to be an underestimate.
With a population of 2,000,000 in Tijuana, 5% equals 100,000 potential homosexuals. Rosarito's population of around 170,000, 5% yields 8,500 alone. For only 10,000 GLBT to exist that would be one half of one percent in Tijuana alone.
Has any GLBT population ever been estimated with such low percentages? Even in Latin American countries?
These numbers deserve some scrutiny. What percentage would you guess the GLBT population to be in Baja Norte?
