Mexico City Lawmakers to Consider Gay Marriage
MEXICO CITY – The leftist PRD introduced a bill in the municipal legislature Tuesday that would permit same-sex marriage in the Mexican capital.
“We only want everyone treated equally under the law, there is no intention to violate anyone’s rights, this simply acknowledges the rights of one social sector with no detriment to another,” PRD assemblyman David Razu said.
At a press conference before the bill was presented, Razu said that the bill basically modifies the definition of marriage contained in the Civil Code so that it uses a “neutral language” and will now be in agreement with other articles of law.
“The bill seeks to be in agreement with Article 1 of the Constitution, which says that no person can be discriminated against for any reason, and with Article 2 of the Civil Code, which says that no person can be deprived of the exercise of their rights for reasons of sexual orientation,” he said.
Gays and lesbians, he said, “pay taxes like everyone else, obey the law like everyone else, build the city like everyone else, and there is no reason they should have a different and special set of rules.”
If this bill becomes law, Mexico City would take one more step towards giving gays and heterosexuals equal rights, following the ordinance recognizing civil unions of various kinds that was passed at the end of 2006.
